“There is no shame in my skin shade”
In 2016 we, as young black females, still live through the pressure of colourism. Whether dark or light, we are judged, stereotyped and treated differently within our community for our complexions.
We have moved forward and many things have improved with social media trends such as #BLACKGIRLMAGIC, but is this enough? Is social media just commercialising and objectifying us? Is social media part of the problem and causing more depression and self reflection? Are we underestimating the power that a small cellular device holds?
Taking inspiration from Hype Williams’ film ‘Belly’, 1998, i use the same colours and aesthetics in a particular scene to show the division between both shades and complexion, the relationships between our black females and how we should end the conversation and issues of colourism.
Many thanks to young black females that took part, sending me their thoughts, opinions and experiences. You’ve made this project what it is.
